Typeform is one of the more well-known form builders, mostly because of its one-question-at-a-time interface. It makes surveys feel less overwhelming and generally leads to better completion rates than traditional wall-of-questions forms.
If you're just getting started with Typeform, this guide covers everything you need to build and share your first survey.
Creating Your Account
Go to typeform.com and sign up. You can use Google, Microsoft, or an email and password. The free plan lets you create forms with up to 10 questions and collect 10 responses per month. If you need more than that, you'll want to look at their paid plans (which start at $25/month billed annually).
Starting a New Form
From your dashboard, click "Create new" and pick either a blank form or a template. Templates can save you time if your use case is common (feedback, quiz, registration). If you go blank, you'll start with an empty form and add questions one by one.
Adding Questions
Click the plus button on the left panel to add a new question. Typeform supports a bunch of question types: short text, long text, multiple choice, picture choice, yes/no, rating, opinion scale, number, date, email, and more. Each question shows up as its own screen in the final form.
For each question you can add a description (helpful for context), make it required, and set validation rules like minimum/maximum values or character limits. You can also add images or videos to individual questions.
Adding Logic Jumps
One of Typeform's stronger features is logic jumps. Click the logic icon on a question to set up rules like "If they answer X, skip to question Y." This lets you create personalized paths through your survey. It works at the question level, which is more flexible than Google Forms' section-level branching.
Customizing the Design
Click the design tab to change fonts, colors, and background. You can upload a background image or pick from Typeform's gallery. The customization is decent, though some options are locked behind the paid plans. You can also add your logo to the top of the form.
Sharing Your Survey
When you're done building, click "Share." Typeform gives you a direct link, an embed code for your website, and options to share via email. The embed options include a standard iframe, a popup, and a slider that appears from the side of the page.
Viewing Results
Click the Results tab to see your responses. Typeform shows both a summary view with charts and an individual responses view. You can export to CSV or connect Google Sheets to sync responses automatically (though Sheets integration requires a paid plan).
Tips for Better Surveys
- Keep it under 10 questions if possible. Shorter surveys get more completions
- Use logic jumps to skip irrelevant questions
- Write questions in plain language, not formal survey-speak
- Test your survey on mobile before sharing it
- Add a thank you screen that actually says something useful
